Tripura’s Supreme Court today refused to adjourn the investigation against Trinamool’s National Secretary General Abhishek Banerjee and five others for allegedly impeding the performance of their duties, and asked the state government to justify the case within two weeks. would not be destroyed .
In Tripura, a complaint has been lodged against Mr Banerjee, MP Dola Sen, the Minister of Education of West Bengal, Bratya Basu, Trinamool’s Tripura leader Subal Bhowmick and two others under Section 186 of the IPC for alleged obstruction of the police who carry out their duties.
Senior TMC leader Subal Bhowmick then filed a plea in court to drop the case and postpone the investigation against the Trinamool leaders.
Judge AA Kureshi, while hearing the case, asked the state government to submit a response within two weeks as to why the case should not be dropped, and asked the police to continue the investigation.
However, the judge insisted that the police should not submit its final report without consulting the court.
Kiran Kumar, the Khowai District Police Inspector, said a suo moto complaint was filed on Aug. 10 against the TMC leaders for “misbehaving” with the officers on duty two days ago.
“We booked them on August 10 under Section 186 (Restriction of officials in the performance of his public function) and 36 (Common intention) of the IPC. The FIR covers access to Khowai Police Station. They will be sued.” the officer had said.
At least 14 Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders and workers were arrested in the Khowai district on Aug. 8, including those injured in an alleged attack by BJP men the day before, for “violating the COVID-19 standards”.
Shortly afterwards, the party’s national secretary, who is also the nephew of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the party’s de facto No. 2, flew from Bengal to Agartala to meet the detained workers at Khowai Police Station.
The detainees were later brought before a local court, which released them on bail.
In a video that went viral on social media, the national secretary general of TMC was seen raising his hand to ask why his supporters were arrested “after dealing with attacks”.
According to police, the 14 TMC members have been arrested for venturing after the imposition of a 7 p.m. curfew, in violation of COVID-19 restrictions.
Subal Bhowmick said: “We are pleased that the Supreme Court has admitted the case. Let the police investigate … the truth will come out.”
