The BJP-led North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) House on Friday approved a proposal to waive property taxes for owners of houses and residential lots up to 50 sqm, subject to certain conditions, officials said.
The proposal, which now goes to the municipal commissioner, received a lot of commotion during the debate in the House of Representatives.
“The proposal was moved as a private bill during the House proceedings and got the nod. Various sections of society had protested against NDMC leaders seeking financial aid in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic,” senior BJP leader and ex-mayor of North Delhi Jai Prakash said.
He said the benefit only accrues to owners who live in such properties themselves and have not rented it out to a tenant and where members of only one family reside.
Mr Prakash said this move will mainly benefit people living in unauthorized colonies or JJ clusters and other areas on the outskirts of the city.
The proposal also included exempting the payment of property taxes owed to people living in areas within Lal Dora, the expanded Lal Dora and 544 unauthorized regularized colonies and unauthorized colonies and houses assigned to displaced Kashmiris.
North Delhi Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh said this move will bring great relief to people in the time of the pandemic.
A statement from the NDMC was quoted as saying that the salaries of all employees owed until July have been released.
Jogi Ram Jain, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the NDMC, said that under the passed proposal, residents of Lal Dora and extended Lal Dora are only required to pay the property tax for the fiscal year 2021-22 and the prior tax due will be waived.
The same goes for residents of unauthorized regularized colonies and unauthorized colonies, he said.
Under the proposal, commercial property owners in disallowed colonies will also have to pay property taxes for the 2021-22 fiscal year; 2020-21 and 2019-20, and prior tax due will be waived, he said.
Also, the increase in several other taxes made under the recommendations of the Third Municipal Taxation Commission will be reversed under the proposal.
Meanwhile, a ”Mosquito Terminator” train was launched Friday by the NDMC in conjunction with the Northern Railway.
The mayor of the municipality has flagged the train from New Delhi railway station. It would spray larvicide on the sides of the spores to control mosquito breeding.
