In view of a significant drop in COVID-19 cases in Gujarat in the recent past, the State Election Commission (SEC) has decided to hold elections for the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation (GMC) on October 3, nearly six months after it was postponed. due to the pandemic.
According to the latest schedule announced Monday by the SEC, the polls for the 44-seat GMC in 11 divisions will be held on Oct. 3 between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.
“Vote counting and declaration of the result will take place on October 5,” state election commissioner Sanjay Prasad told reporters in Gandhinagar.
If necessary, a re-vote will be held on 4 October.
“Apart from the civil body of Gandhinagar, elections will be held for Okha and Tharad municipalities on October 3. Midterm polls for Bhanvad municipality and by-elections to elect representatives from 104 vacant seats from various other local bodies,” said the Mr Prasad. .
With the announcement of the elections, the model code of conduct has now come into effect in Gujarat, Prasad said.
He said the last date to submit nominations for elections is September 18.
All eight municipal corporations in Gujarat are controlled by the ruling BJP.
