A Christian priest was beaten up today by a right-wing mob at a police station in Raipur over allegations of forced religious conversions. This followed heated discussions between members of the angry mob and those who had accompanied the pastor to the property after being called for questioning.
The incident took place at the Purani Basti Police Station in Raipur. Police had received complaints of forced religious conversions in the Bhatagaon area. Some local right-wing Hindutva leaders also reached the police station shortly afterwards.

The complainants were furious and called the building and demanded action against those who carried out such renovations.
The arrival of the pastor, along with some other members of the Christian community in the Bhatagaon area, sparked a furious altercation between the crowd and those called in for questioning.
The pastor was then taken to the duty officer’s room where the tense situation only got worse. Soon, the pastor was physically assaulted, officials said. A video of the incident shows some members beating the priest with slippers and shoes.
“We had not received any complaints before. No damage was done to the police station during the altercation between the two groups. We are now investigating the complaint (of conversions). Based on what we find, we will take action,” said Additional Superintendent of police (city) Tarakeswar Patel.
The police have taken cognizance of the attack on the assault and have prepared an official report against seven people.
