A 30-year-old man died by suicide after allegedly hacking his wife to death with an ax at their home in Odisha’s Ganjam district, police said.
The incident happened in the village of Sodak in the Polasara Police Station, they said.
Police found the body of Bipin Gouda, a daily bet, hanging from the ceiling, while the body of his wife Lili (23) lay in a pool of blood, she added.
The bodies were sent to MKCG Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem examination, said sub-police officer Purushottampur Suryamani Pradhan.
He said an ax was found from the house, believed to have been used by Bipin to kill his wife.
While the exact cause has yet to be determined, police suspect the murder and suicide were due to a family conflict.
Lili and Bipin married on May 24 and they often argued, police said.
The bodies were first noticed by Bipin’s father the morning after he woke up, they said.
He immediately informed the police and Lili’s family.
“A murder case has been registered. The police are investigating the case from different angles,” said the police officer.
The case was filed on the basis of a complaint filed by Lili’s brother Kesab Gouda, he said.
