The Thane’s action against illegal street vendors took a horrific turn today when a man, furious at the measures taken, attacked a senior official with a knife and severed three fingers from her hand.
Thane, assistant councilor Kalpita Pimple, was attacked by vegetable seller Amarjit Yadav while overseeing a drive to clear out unauthorized street vendors in the town of Kasarvadavali.
Ms. Pimple was admitted to Jupiter Hospital a short distance away. An attempt will be made to reattach the severed fingers to her hand, officials said.
Her condition was stable after hospitalization, they said. Yadav was arrested and an investigation into the incident has been launched.
Footage from the scene immediately after the incident showed Yadav screaming in protest and carrying two knives as police tried to convince him to surrender. He can also be seen putting a knife on his own neck, although it was not clear from the video whether he threatened suicide.
Police are now investigating the peddler’s criminal record for criminal antecedents.
