A villager was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Raigarh district of Chhattisgarh on Wednesday, the region’s second incident this month, officials said.
Mohitram Yadav, 39, was attacked by the jumbo in the village of Ongna under the Dharamjaigarh Forest Division around 3 a.m. as he was on his way to answer nature’s call, a forest official said.
The elephant grabbed the man with his trunk and trampled him, he said.
After being warned, forest personnel reached the village, located more than 250 km from the capital Raipur, and moved the body for postmortem, he said.
The victim’s wife was immediately awarded Rs 25,000 while the remaining compensation will be given after completing necessary formalities, the official said.
On August 3, a 55-year-old man was killed in an elephant attack in the same area.
The latest incident has killed eight people so far this year in separate elephant attacks in the Dharamjaigarh area, forest officials said.
Several incidents of human-elephant conflict have been reported in the past from the densely forested north of Chhattisgarh, which consists of Surguja, Surajpur, Korba, Raigarh, Jashpur, Balrampur and Korea districts.
The region has witnessed several murders of villagers and widespread damage to homes and crops by rogue elephants.
According to government data, 204 people were killed in elephant attacks, while 45 jumbos died in the state in the past three years (2018, 2019, 2020).
