A missing complaint was filed by the taxi aggregator.
Two people from Uttar Pradesh have been arrested for allegedly kidnapping and killing a taxi driver and then dumping the body in Maharashtra’s Thane, an official said Thursday.
The two accused men – Rahulkumar Baburao Gautam (24) and Dharmendrakumar alias Vakil Sampatram Gautam (27) – and four of their associates booked a taxi to go from Kalyan town in Thane to Dhule district on August 1.
When the taxi reached the Kasara Ghat, they asked the driver to stop the vehicle.
They then allegedly killed the taxi driver, dumped the body near the ghat area and fled by car to Uttar Pradesh, the MFC police station officer in Kalyan said.
The taxi aggregator filed a missing person complaint the following day.
During the investigation into the case, the police monitored the suspect’s movement via the mobile phone from which the taxi was booked. They also checked CCTV footage at several checkpoints and targeted the suspects, the official said.
Police arrested the two men from Bhadohi in UP on Aug. 9 and took them to Thane, he said.
During the interrogation, the two suspects told the police about the place where they had dumped the body. Police later recovered the body from the scene and sent it for autopsy, the official said.
The two accused also told police they stole the taxi on behalf of a garage owner in Bhadohi in UP, he said.
Police have seized the car and are looking for the other suspects, including the garage owner, the official said.
A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, he added.
