Nokia G22 is the new mid-range phone
Nokia continues to focus on mid-range devices, but now wants to make them easy to repair.
Nokia launched new Android phones this week in the run-up to the Mobile World Congress 2023 (MWC 2023). The company continues to focus on the mid-range segment, including its C and G series phones. It has stayed away from the spec battle with the Chinese brands and that seems to have affected its popularity among buyers and the latest market reports confirm the situation.
But Nokia wants to operate within its means and HMD Global now wants to offer environmentally friendly devices that are easy for consumers to repair. The Nokia G22 smartphone is the company’s first to focus on ease of repair, following Apple and Samsung in this measure. The company that makes Nokia phones claims that Nokia G22 owners can replace the battery in 5 minutes to keep the phone working for years to come. The most intriguing thing about this replacement is that you don’t need any special tools to open the panel.
Nokia says the battery can be swapped out by opening the panel using the supplied SIM eject pin or a screwdriver. That’s not all, HMD Global claims that you can replace the phone’s broken screen in 20 minutes using basic tools. The company has teamed up with repair specialists iFixit who offer parts and tools and even walk you through the steps to replace the battery and broken screen and even replace the charging port on the device.
iFixit has previously criticized Apple for its so-called third-party repair program. The company wanted iPhone owners to buy the special tools from them and also buy official parts, which negated the whole point of making iPhones easy to repair. But with the Nokia G22 you see how an open ecosystem functions in terms of repairability at home.
Nokia G22 also focuses on environmental friendliness, as the back panel is made from 100 percent recycled plastic. When it comes to the phone itself, there’s not much to note. It has a 6.52-inch HD+ display with a 90Hz refresh rate display and is powered by a Unisoc T606 chipset with 4GB of RAM.
The phone has a 50-megapixel main sensor along with dual 2-megapixel macro and depth sensors. It packs a 5055mAh battery that charges at 20W. The Nokia G22 is promised to get Android 14 OS and three years of security updates, which doesn’t sound like much these days. It costs $190 (around Rs 15,700) and could launch in India soon.
