NASA wants AI to help with its space mission
The space agency wants AI technology to aid in its missions and soon it will be deployed to support the astronauts.
We can all agree that artificial intelligence (AI) is spreading its wings everywhere, but now it’s ready to fly beyond our atmosphere, thanks to NASA. According to reports, the space agency is working on its own version of ChatGPT that will be used for space missions and to help astronauts with various applications. The Guardian’s report suggests that the language model being developed by NASA will help conduct experiments for missions and even control other maneuvers.
NASA scientists believe that AI can propel spacecraft to perform complex tasks, such as answering questions from the astronauts or even helping them with bigger discoveries in the solar system and perhaps even other galaxies. NASA already has a roadmap to use its AI technology for its upcoming Lunar Gateway mission, the report adds.
The space agency will use the space station to orbit the moon and provide essential support for the Artemis mission. NASA believes letting AI do the heavy lifting will simplify tasks for the astronauts and help them deliver results more efficiently.
Spacecraft are a mix of hardware and software applications, and NASA believes AI can help solve problems in space without having to send an engineer as part of the mission, saving resources and costs for the missions. It will be interesting to hear more about NASA’s AI technology and whether it has the computing power to challenge ChatGPT, even though the space agency has a specific focus for its development.
But these language models are becoming increasingly popular for a variety of applications, and it’s no surprise that AI is moving beyond the realm of our atmosphere and ready to meet the challenges facing space missions.
