Intel is again under scrutiny by the European Union.
According to a registration dossier, Intel could face another EU antitrust fine. This comes after the American chipmaker won a lawsuit last year against an earlier fine of 1.06 billion euros ($1.2 billion).
Intel could face another antitrust fine from the EU despite winning its lawsuit last year against a 1.06 billion euro ($1.2 billion) fine imposed 14 years ago for interfering with a rival, said the US chipmaker in a registration application.
Last year, Intel convinced Europe’s second highest court to quash the fine the European Commission handed down in 2009 for giving discounts to four computer makers to buy most of their chips from the company and not from rival Advanced Micro Devices.
The Court’s decision of January 2022 did not overturn the EC’s 2009 finding that Intel made payments to prevent the sale of specific competing products, and in January 2023 the EC reopened its administrative proceedings seeking a fine against Intel on the basis of that alleged conduct.” the company said in a Jan. 26 filing.
“Given the procedural nature and nature of this proceeding, we are unable to make a reasonable estimate of the potential loss or magnitude of any losses that could arise from this case,” it said.
Companies risk fines of up to 10% of their global turnover for breaches of EU antitrust law.
