Google’s Apprentice Bard is reportedly quite reminiscent of ChatGPT.
Google could be working on a revamped search experience, with an all-new design featuring a ChatGPT-like chatbot called “Apprentice Bard.”
With OpenAI and Microsoft joining forces, rivals like Google are testing new ways to compete with this suddenly introduced disruption. In addition to declaring ChatGPT “code red,” Google has reportedly ramped up testing to introduce a new Google search experience powered by ChatGPT-like prompts and design.
According to a report from CNBC, Google is working on a revamped search experience, with an all-new design that could include a chatbot called “Apprentice Bard.” The chatbot is based on LaMDA – Google’s own language model similar to OpenAI’s GPT 3.5, but unlike GPT 3.5, Google’s LaMDA has a more recent database and is not limited to 2021.
Google is proceeding cautiously in the AI space, aware of the potential for “reputational risk,” unlike OpenAI, which, as a young startup, takes a bold approach.
Apprentice Bard is reportedly quite reminiscent of ChatGPT: users can simply type a question into a dialog box and get an answer. And, as noted earlier, Apprentice Bard can answer with more recent facts and data. Google “employees have even noticed that Apprentice Bard’s responses have become more sophisticated in recent weeks.”
Additionally, Google could also experiment with different home page designs, including one that replaces the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button with five different prompts for suggested questions. This design language creates a striking resemblance to ChatGPT’s homepage.
“When a question is entered, the search results show a gray bubble directly below the search bar, offering more human answers than typical search results. Immediately below that, the page suggests several follow-up questions related to the first one. Typical search results are displayed below, including links and headlines,” CNBC said.
It remains uncertain when Google will introduce the new interface or the LaMDA technology powered Apprentice Bard chatbot. However, now that a ‘code red’ is in effect, the company can implement these updates sooner rather than later.
