Google Search shows blank or broken images in the Top Stories carousel. When you search a topic on Google, the Top Stories panel — which shows the most read news stories across media — now shows blank or blurry image thumbnails. The issue started popping up since Wednesday morning and several users have flagged the issue on Twitter with screenshots. The broken image issue persists and Google has not provided any confirmation or explanation for this so far. We have contacted the company for comment.
The thumbnails on the Top Stories carousel appear blank or blurry. If you’re using a desktop browser, you should ideally see three stories at the top of the carousel. In some cases, some thumbnails look good while others don’t. However, in most cases, all three thumbnails are blank, blurry, or broken. A similar problem is also seen in Google’s mobile browser.

According to a report by Search Engine Roundtable, the problem has been popping up since morning of August 18. Several users took to Twitter to share screenshots of the issue. Some users tagged Google’s Public Search Liaison Danny Sullivan, Google Search Advocate John Mueller, and others and asked if this is related to some specific keywords or a general glitch.
At the time of writing, Google has yet to officially acknowledge the issue and explain why this is happening. It is also not yet known when a solution can be expected. Gadgets 360 has contacted Google. This report will be updated as soon as we hear anything. It should be noted that aside from the image issue, everything else seems to work fine as the links on the carousel open properly on their respective news websites.
