Meta has announced the arrival of a new split payments feature in Facebook Messenger. As the name suggests, this feature allows you to calculate expenses and share them with others right from Facebook Messenger. This feature essentially seems to provide an easier method of sharing bills and expenses — splitting a dinner bill with friends, for example. Using this new split payment feature, Facebook Messenger users can split bills evenly or adjust the contribution for each individual, including their own contribution.
The company took to its blog post to announce the new Split Payment feature in Facebook Messenger. 9to5Mac reports that this new bill-splitting feature is still in beta and will initially be exclusive to US users. The rollout will start early next week. As mentioned before, it helps users share the cost of bills, expenses and payments. This feature is especially useful for people who share an apartment and need to share monthly rent and other expenses with their partner. It can also come in handy for a group dinner with a lot of people.
Split Payments allows users to add the number of people to share the expense with, and by default, the amount entered is split into equal parts. A user can also change any person’s contribution, including their own. To use split payments, click the Get Started button in a group chat or the Payments Hub in Messenger. Users can change the contribution in the Split Payments option and send a notification to all users who need to make payments. After entering a personal message and confirming your Facebook Pay details, the request is sent and can be viewed in the group chat thread.
Once someone has made the payment, you can mark the transaction as ‘complete’. The Split Payment feature automatically takes your share into account as well and calculates the amount owed accordingly.
