Abba broke up nearly 40 years ago and vowed never to reunite. The legendary Swedish pop group has now renounced that. The digital avatars of the four band members – Agnetha Fältskog, Anni-Frid Lyngstad, Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus – are joined by a 10-piece live band performing 22 of their greatest hits. The concert’s opening night will be hosted on May 27 in a purpose-built arena in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London. The tickets are available from September 7.
It was difficult to create the digital avatars of the Abba members, who are now in their seventies. The creators used motion capture technology to scan “every mannerism and movement” of the musicians as they performed.
Abba, one of the greatest pop acts of all time, broke up in 1982, but there was never an official announcement. Abba became world famous when they won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974 with ‘Waterloo’.
The long-awaited reunion started while working on the show and the band members ended up in the recording studio. “In the beginning it was just two songs, and then we said, ‘Well, maybe we should do a few more,'” Andersson told the BBC.
They ended up recording 10 songs. Two of them premiered a few days ago. They are “I still have faith in you” and “Don’t shut me down”. The album will be released on November 5.
