Mobile app adoption has leveled off, with global app downloads on the Apple App Store and Google Play declining 0.1 percent year over year to 35.5 billion in the fourth quarter of 2022, according to a new report.
According to Sensor Tower, social media apps remain fiercely competitive.
Instagram has maintained its position among the top three apps for the past seven quarters since Q2 2021, maintaining its position as the number one app globally in Q4 2022.
TikTok and Facebook followed as the number 2 and 3 apps worldwide respectively.
While global downloads of the top mobile games declined quarter on quarter, events such as the World Cup may have increased football game downloads.
FIFA Mobile and Soccer Super Star grew 137 percent and 112 percent Q/Q in the fourth quarter, respectively.
Kitka Games’ Stumble Guys was a standout mobile app that dominated download growth in 2022. The game was the fastest growing app of 2022 in terms of downloads.
“It ranked number 1 in Latin America and Europe, with more than 50 million downloads and 36 million downloads in those regions by 2022, respectively,” the report said.
Meanwhile, a recent data.ai annual report also found that consumer spending on apps is down 2 percent to $167 billion by 2022, meaning interest in the app ecosystem is waning.
