Police Inspector General (IGP), Kashmir, Vijay Kumar said on Saturday that security forces were on alert and would address all challenges, including those posed by the Taliban, in the valley.
He sought the cooperation of the people in maintaining peace in Jammu and Kashmir.
“As a police officer, whatever terrorist comes here, my job is to generate input and neutralize him, as well as the threat, in an operation with the military,” Kumar told reporters at the military’s Victor Force headquarters in Awantipora. area of Pulwama district.
“We will address all challenges in a professional manner and we are fully alert,” he said when asked about the Taliban threat in Kashmir.
The IGP urged people to share information about terrorists, suicide bombers or anyone planning to set up IEDs, saying that such elements harm society.
“If there is a major incident, the locals will suffer first, tourists will be afraid to come here, so whose economy will it affect? It’s the local economy. So I request the people to talk to the police or security forces any such information,” he added.
Asked about attacks on political workers, Mr Kumar said they were soft targets for terrorists.
“Political workers have been targeted all the time because they are soft targets, such as police officers when they visit their homes or journalists who speak the truth. It has happened before,” he said.
The IGP said that while the police provided security to as many such individuals as possible, it is “not possible” to provide security to everyone.
“However, if someone has a threat perception or lives in a vulnerable area, they will be provided with security after assessment,” Kumar said.
He said police have been given a lead in the recent murder of Apni party leader Ghulam Rasool Lone in Kulgam district.
“We have clues and very soon we will either arrest or neutralize them, in a meeting,” he added.
Lone was shot and killed by terrorists in the Devsar area of Kulgam on Thursday.
