The British Defense Secretary said he does not think sending British fighter jets is the right approach.
London:
Britain has not made a “firm decision” not to send its fighter jets to Ukraine, but at the moment does not think this is the right course of action, Defense Secretary Ben Wallace said on Wednesday.
“I’ve been at this for quite a long time. And I’ve learned two things: never rule anything out and never rule anything out,” he told reporters when asked why Britain wouldn’t send jets to Ukraine.
“This is not a solid decision,” he added. “For now, I don’t think that’s the right approach. … What will happen in this conflict this year is the opportunity for Ukrainians to deploy Western armor against Russia.”
On Tuesday, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s spokesman said it would not be practical to send jets to Ukraine because it would take months to learn how to fly them.
Wallace said Britain’s jets are very complex and may not be applicable in Ukraine.
“What they need now is armor and tanks,” he said. “I think we should be pretty sure that (jets) is the next requirement to win the battle. But for now I think we’ll focus on the tanks, the land battle.”
