Kyiv:
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday urged the United States to stay united as questions arise over US support for his country after midterm elections to determine control of the US Congress.
“I call on you to preserve the unshakable unity, as it is now, until that same day when we all hear those important words we have dreamed of… Until we hear that peace is finally restored. Democracies must not stop on their road to victory,” he said in a recorded speech, receiving the US Liberty Medal.
US President Joe Biden, who was a key ally of Ukraine in providing weapons and financial support to fend off the invasion of Moscow, has encouraged voters to support Democrats in the House of Representatives and Senate.
If both flip, Biden would be nothing more than a lame duck, casting doubt on continued strong US support for Kiev.
“As in any democratic society, Ukrainians have different views on life and politics. As was the case in previous years, we felt divided on whether we could ever stand together,” Zelensky said.
“But when Russia decided to destroy our freedom and wipe Ukraine off the face of the earth, we immediately became united and we maintain this unity.”
The US Congress pledged $40 billion in May for Ukraine with cross-party support and Ukraine’s defense secretary this week thanked the US after Kiev received more air defense systems.
