Bardhaman (West Bengal):
A local Trinamool leader was shot dead in front of his father on Tuesday by unidentified gunmen in Purba Bardhaman district of West Bengal, police said.
The ruling party in West Bengal claimed the BJP was behind the murder, an accusation the opposition party denied.
The incident happened when 40-year-old Chanchal Bakshi, a young Trinamool leader from the Devshala area of Ausgram, was returning home on a motorcycle with his father Shyamal Bakshi, the local panchayat president, from a party program, an officer said. .
As the two approached a forest area, some motorcycle assailants waiting for them fired a few shots at the young Trinamool leader and fled the spot, he said. Chanchal Bakshi was rushed to a local hospital where doctors pronounced him dead, the officer said.
Arup Mirdha, the president of the Trinamool Valki area and Syed Haidar Ali, the leader of the Panchayat Samiti, claimed that “BJP goons” killed Chandan Bakshi for being a popular leader who contributed to the ruling party’s victory in the Ausgram constituency in this year’s assembly elections.
Shyamal Roy, the general secretary of the BJP district, rejected the claim, claiming that the killing was the result of a power struggle within the ruling party.
Another Trinamool leader was assassinated earlier this year in the Mangalkot area of the district.
