Brussels, Belgium:
Three people were injured, one seriously, on Monday in a knife attack at a metro station near the European Union headquarters in Brussels, officials said, adding that the attacker had been arrested.
Brussels mayor Philippe Close said the man was quickly apprehended due to a coordinated police action at Schuman metro station.
Police say one of the injured is in “critical condition”.
The suspected attacker was known to police for having “psychiatric problems,” a source close to the investigation said.
The attack took place during rush hour around 6 p.m.
European Union chief Charles Michel, a former Belgian prime minister, thanked police in a tweet and said he was thinking with the victims.
An AFP journalist at the site said a woman told people not to enter the station, saying a man was inside armed with a knife when police burst in.
Traffic on the line was interrupted.
