Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram said today that those who put freedom above any other right should welcome the pledge of unity of 19 political parties and backed by the Samajwadi party.
Mr Chidambaram’s comments came a day after leaders of 19 opposition parties announced they would stage joint protests across the country from September 20-30, urging people to save India for a better future.
After a virtual meeting of the opposition parties, where they emphasized that they must move forward together to defeat the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the leaders also submitted an 11-point charter of demands. the government.
Referring to the development, Mr Chidambaram said those who put freedom above any other right should welcome the promise of unity.
“Bhakts and trolls will ridicule the show of unity, but they must remember the famous words of the German Lutheran pastor Martin Niemöller. Cynics will scoff at the effort, but they will one day realize that we are fighting for the freedom of all people , including the cynics,” the former Union minister tweeted.
On Friday, Congress Speaker Sonia Gandhi urged top opposition leaders to rise above political coercion to tackle the BJP in the interest of the nation and plan “systematically” to achieve the “ultimate goal” of winning the Lok Sabha 2024 polls to realize a government that believes in the values of free movement and the provisions of the Constitution.
Ms Gandhi sounded the clarion at a virtual meeting of leaders of 19 opposition parties, including NCP supremo Sharad Pawar and four non-congress chief ministers – TMC’s Mamata Banerjee (West Bengal), DMK’s MK Stalin (Tamil Nadu), Shiv Sena’s Uddhav Thackeray (Maharashtra) and JMM’s Hemant Soren (Jharkhand) — hosted by her.
Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav wrote a letter to the president of the congress expressing his inability to participate in the meeting.
