A tricky math exam question aimed at fifth graders has gone viral on the internet after many adults said they couldn’t solve it.
The challenging question, intended for students between the ages of 10 and 11, reads: ”Klein read 30 pages of a book on Monday and 1/8 of the book on Tuesday. Social media users were amazed at the difficulty of the question, with many saying they would definitely fail the exam if the questions were that difficult. Many users said they couldn’t solve the problem while some tried to decrypt it.
One person commented, “And now we can all see why Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? worked as a game show.” Another said, ‘I always think to myself; ‘Ugh. People really need to be tested on basic skills before being allowed into society. And then I see this and realize I shouldn’t go into society LOL!”
A third quipped, “Right? Am I the only one who thinks OP [Original Poster] does a 5th grade student post his homework on Reddit so people respond with the answer?
However, there were also many who were quick enough to solve the difficult equation and posted the answer with a step-by-step explanation. A third user took a look at those who couldn’t solve the problem and wrote, “Apparently the somewhat interesting part is too stupid for the average Redditor.”
A fourth person who solved it explained: “If Klein started the book on Monday, divide 30 pages by five to find how much one eighth is worth, and the answer is six. You then do eight times six which is equal to 48 – and this is the correct answer.”
