RSS affiliate Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (BKS) has warned of nationwide agitation starting Sept. 8 if the Center does not comply with its demands regarding agricultural laws and Minimum Support Price (MSP) before the end of this month.
The minimum support price should be determined on the basis of costs and a new law should be drafted, taking into account farmers’ concerns, to resolve the dispute arising from the new agricultural laws, it said.
“For these requirements, a national symbolic dharna will be held on September 8. The Modi government has been given until August 31 to comply with the requirements. If it does not take a positive stance on our demands, then after the dharna a decision on further steps will be taken on September 8,” said BKS treasurer Yugal Kishore Mishra.
“Farmers are not getting a rewarding price for their products. MSP is not rewarding,” he said, adding that his organization had to act because of this.
“RSS does not control the government of Narendra Modi, otherwise our organization would not have to come to agitation. No government has done serious things that are in the interest of the farmers,” said the BKS leader.
Asked about Prime Minister Modi’s government promise to double farmers’ incomes, he said it would first need to determine how much they spend.
When asked whether both the Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Narendra Modi governments were ignoring peasants, Mr. Mishra replied, “Absolutely.”
“Neither Atal’s government nor Prime Minister Modi’s government considered the issue of a rewarding price on the basis of costs,” he said.
