“I thought about a month before I joined the party,” said S Jaishankar.
New Delhi:
Foreign Minister S Jaishankar said on Tuesday that he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as he felt it was the right party at the right time for India’s rise and progress.
In an exclusive interview with ANI, Mr. Jaishankar said, “I am a Rajya Sabha member. My term expires this year. After that, we will have to see. I have genuine awe for people irrespective of the party who spent their lives in politics. You don’t know how incredibly difficult it is. How demanding it is. Only when you’re in politics can you really see what it is.”
Mr. Jaishankar’s reply came after being asked if he would participate in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. He said involvement in Rajya Sabha is much less than that of Lok Sabha.
“Those who contest the Lok Sabha election in particular are like the vanguard. I am entering politics at a fairly mature age from another profession. As a minister, I have to spend a lot of time here. As a resident of Delhi, I have to spend a lot of time here Rajya Sabha demands are much less than Lok Sabha demands,” he stressed.
When asked about joining politics, Mr. Jaishankar said, “I have thought about it for a long time. I became a minister at the end of May. I thought about joining the party for about a month. I joined because I feel that they are the right party at the right time for the rise and progress of India I had no active desire to go into politics at all It came as a complete surprise The Prime Minister would even consider me for such a job and I was minister even before I joined a political party. So I would be different from a lot of other people who might also have been in the bureaucracy before they started that role.”
The minister said it was Prime Minister Narendra Modi who asked him to join the cabinet after the BJP returned to power in 2019.
“Who asked me to join the cabinet, yes, the prime minister asked me,” he said.
Recalling his first meeting with Prime Minister Modi in 2011, Mr. Jaishankar said: “When did I first meet Modi? I met him in November 2011 in Beijing. He was then Chief Minister. He had come to visit, that’s how our acquaintance began I suppose in light of subsequent events I must have made a good impression.’
The minister further noted that the environment in Delhi is more polarized than it should be.
“I sometimes feel that the argumentation, debates, relations and courtesies, especially in Delhi, are more polarized than it should be… than it should be for people’s concern for the good of the country. party positions.”
S Jaishankar has an illustrious career spanning 38 years as a diplomat. He was India’s Ambassador to China, Czech Republic, USA and Singapore. He also served as the Foreign Minister of India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi picked him up to join his cabinet as foreign minister in 2019.
