India’s stature has grown under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and it has emerged as a world leader, say a majority of people contacted in a special NewsMadura survey conducted in conjunction with Lokniti-Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS). The “Public Opinion” survey – conducted to gauge public mood as the government has been in power for nine years and the BJP is gearing up for a third consecutive term next year – also found that a majority of people feel that the cultural capital of India has grown under the NDA government.
But public opinion is mixed about the government’s handling of Pakistan and China.
When asked how they rate the government’s handling of China, 29 percent of people said it was good. But almost an equal percentage – 28 percent – thought it was bad. Thirteen percent of people said it was average.
When asked how they rate the government’s approach to Pakistan, 28 percent said it was good, while 30 percent said it was bad. Thirteen percent of people rated it as average.
But when asked if the country’s global stature grew under Prime Minister Modi, an overwhelming 63 percent answered in the affirmative. Only 23 percent were dissatisfied.
A majority also agreed that India is now a world leader. Fifty-four percent of people said yes and only 27 percent disagreed.
The Lokniti-CSDS survey was conducted between May 10 and May 19 among 7,202 people across 19 states and 71 constituencies in India.
It covered a cross-section of people representative of India’s population, the surveyors have said.
