The curfew in the West Imphal district was to be eased from 5am to 6pm on Monday after Chief Minister Biren Singh inspected the ground situation in the hills next to Bishnupur-Churachandpur on Sunday.
Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Biren Singh inspected the situation on the ground in the hills bordering Bishnupur-Churachandpur.
The district magistrate’s order said: “There has been significant improvement in the law and orders in the district and there is a need for relaxation of the movement restriction to facilitate the general public to purchase the essential items including medicines and food. “
“Therefore, the restriction of movement of the general public outside their residences is now hereby lifted before July 3, 2023 (Monday) from 5:00 AM to 6:00 PM for all parts of Imphal West District,” the order said.
“However, the movement of persons belonging to essential services such as health, electricity, PHED, municipality, press and electronic media and the functioning of courts are exempt from further imposition of curfew after the elapse of the easing period,” the order continued. .
Nearly two months ago on May 3, ethnic clashes erupted in the state after clashes broke out at a rally organized by the All Tribal Students Union (ATSU) to protest the demand to include Meiteis in the list of Scheduled Tribes (STs).
The Assam Rifles have so far evacuated more than 50,000 displaced people from all communities in violence-ravaged Manipur, providing them with safe passage, shelter, food and medicine.
Earlier on June 24, Home Minister Shah pledged to restore peace to the state, while opposition parties questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “silence” on the matter at the all-party meeting on the violence in Manipur.
Amit Shah also called a meeting to take stock of the situation in the violence-ravaged state. BJP National President JP Nadda, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and CPI(M) MP John Brittas, among other leaders, attended the meeting.
