New Delhi:
Senior congress leader P Chidambaram has alleged that most of the more than Rs 12,000 crore worth of electoral bonds sold so far has been anonymously donated to the BJP by companies, claiming that corporate donation is a way to convince the government thank you for countless “favors”.
The former Union finance minister also questioned why companies are so eager to donate through the “non-transparent electoral bond mechanism”.
“More than Rs 12,000 crore in electoral bonds have been sold so far. Most of the amount has been bought by companies and donated anonymously to the BJP,” Chidambaram claimed in a series of tweets on Monday night.
Companies don’t donate through electoral bonds because they like democracy, he said.
“Corporate donations are the way of expressing gratitude to the government for the numerous favors it has received over the years,” the congressional leader claimed.
“It’s a neat arrangement. Favors are done quietly. Rewards are received in secret. Long live our anonymous democracy,” he said.
