Japanese astronomer captures meteorite impacting moon

A Japanese astronomer has caught a meteorite crashing into the moon by using cameras to track the moon. Daichi Fujii, the curator of the Hiratsuka City Museum, recorded a brief flash on the moon.

According to Space.com, the time of the flash was 20:14:30.8 Japan Standard Time on Feb. 23. Fujii said the meteorite appears to have impacted near Ideler L crater, just northwest of Pitiscus crater.

In a tweet, Fujii wrote: “I was able to capture the largest lunar impact flash in my observational history! This is a photo of the moon impact flash that appeared at 20:14:30.8 on February 23, 2023, taken from my home in Hiratsuka (played on actual speed). It was a huge flash that continued to shine for more than 1 second. Because the moon has no atmosphere, meteors and fireballs cannot be seen, and the moment a crater forms, it glows.”

Meteorites can generate enormous heat and create craters due to their high speed. It travels at about 30,000 mph or 8.3 miles per second on average.

According to Space.com, the newly created crater could be about a dozen meters (39 feet) in diameter and could eventually be imaged by NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter or India’s Chandrayaan 2 lunar probe.
