The first bullet entered the seat of the vehicle and grazed Mr. Azad’s waist as it passed through the door.
The vehicle used in the attack on Bhim army leader Chandrashekhar Azad Ravan has been recovered in Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur district, police said, citing the first major breakthrough in the case. The hatchback – a Swift – was seized late Wednesday evening in the village of Miragpur. The number plate of the car used in the attack showed that it was registered in Haryana, police said.
The vehicle was located using surveillance cameras.
Using CCTV cameras, police officials identified the four men who drove the car to the house where the vehicle was found. But the men remain untraceable because they turned off their phones to evade detection by police, officials said.
Police have detained four people from the home where the vehicle was parked and are questioning them for clues in the case.
Two bullets were fired at Mr. Azad’s car. The first bullet entered the seat of the vehicle and grazed his waist as it passed through the door. The second bullet hit the back door and narrowly missed it.
Superintendent of Police (City) Abimanyu Manglik said Bhim’s army chief was undergoing treatment at Saharanpur District Hospital and his condition was stable.
Heavy police were deployed on the grounds of the district hospital as a precaution as Mr Aazad’s supporters began to gather there in large numbers, chanting slogans and demanding the immediate arrest of the attackers.
Chandrashekhar Aazad has called on his supporters to remain calm and claimed that he will continue to fight constitutionally.
“I did not expect such a sudden attack. I want to appeal to my friends, supporters and workers across the country to keep the peace. We will continue our struggle constitutionally. I am fine with the love and blessings of millions of people .” Aazad told ANI while he was recovering in a hospital.
Meanwhile, the founding member of the Azad Samaj party and the leadership of the media, Ajay Gautam, told PTI that a memorandum would be sent to the president of India and to the chief minister and governor of Uttar Pradesh who are Z-plus- security for their leader.
