Rahul Gandhi said he wants peace to be restored in Manipur.
New Delhi:
Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Friday joked about Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Manipur in Manipur, saying he is engaged in what he called “vulture tourism”.
Mr. Chandrasekhar accused Mr. Gandhi of visiting places where people are suffering rather than actively addressing the long-standing problems in those societies.
“I find that Rahul Gandhi always has a habit of making these visits look almost like a vulture tourist going to and traveling places where suffering takes place. Instead of contributing to decades of tension in some societies that have been under the previous government have been ignored. “He is going there for a vulture tourist visit,” Mr Chandrasekhar said.
He expressed the hope that Mr. Gandhi will find satisfaction in his photo opportunities during his visit and return to his usual pursuits during his holidays abroad.
“I don’t want to comment too much on it. I definitely think everyone wants peace to be restored. The state government doesn’t like violence in Manipur and I hope Rahul Gandhi is happy with his photo opportunity today and gets back to doing what he’s doing for his holidays abroad,” he said.
Earlier on Friday, Gandhi met with Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey in Raj Bhavan and said he would do anything to restore peace to the state.
He reiterated that his party will fully cooperate in bringing peace and tranquility to the state so that the immemorial history of coexistence will maintain the status quo ante.
“Manipur needs peace. I want peace to be restored here. I have visited some relief camps and there are deficiencies in these relief camps, the government should work on this. I am willing to do what I can for the peace of the state,” he told reporters.
Manipur police said on Thursday that the situation is tense in some places with sporadic shooting incidents in the past 24 hours, but normal in most districts.
On May 3, ethnic clashes erupted in the state after clashes broke out at a rally organized by the All Tribal Students Union (ATSU) to protest the demand to include Meiteis in the list of Scheduled Tribes (STs).
