A former student at a pharmacy school in Indore today fired his principal over a delay in receiving his transcript, the Madhya Pradesh police has said. The principal of BM Pharmacy College, Vimukta Sharma, 50, suffered 80 percent burns and is in critical condition, police said. She has been admitted to a private hospital.
The former student, Ashutosh Srivastava, also suffered about 40 percent burns.
Around 4 pm, when the director was about to get into her car to return home, Ashutosh Srivastava accosted her and got into a heated argument. He then poured gasoline on the director and set her on fire, police sources said.
“She is not in a position to make a statement. The suspect has been taken into custody and is being questioned. He also suffered some burns on his hand in the incident,” said Superintendent of Police (Rural) Bhagwat Singh Virde . This is reported by the Press Trust of India news agency.
Police said the 22-year-old had attempted suicide by jumping into nearby Tincha Falls. But he was rescued and is being treated for burns in custody. The college is located in the Simrol area on the outskirts of Indore.
Police said the man was arrested a few months ago for allegedly assaulting a male university faculty member with a knife over the same issue.
He was granted bail and released from prison a few weeks ago.
