A newly elected female sarpanch has been arrested for her alleged involvement in “box robbery” in the Nov. 2 panchayat elections, police said Monday.
The accused has been identified as Rashida, and she was sent to judicial custody after being brought before a city court on Sunday.
A mob allegedly attacked polling stations 77 and 78 in the village of Manauta during the November 2 polls.
Following this incident, a complaint was registered and a new poll ordered.
The results were announced on Nov. 4, and villager Rashida won the poll, police said.
While she and her supporters were still celebrating the win, some alleged videos went viral on social media, showing her alleged involvement in booth capture.
“After filing an FIR, we have investigated the involvement of the newly elected Sarpanch Rashida and have arrested her. We are also verifying the role of others and they will be arrested shortly,” said Varun Singla, Superintendent of Police, Nuh.
The polls for panches and sarpanches in nine Haryana districts – Bhiwani, Jhajjar, Jind, Kaithal, Mahendragarh, Nuh, Panchkula, Panipat and Yamunanagar were conducted on Nov. 2.
