Divita Rai will represent India at the 71st edition of the coveted Miss Universe pageant. The election will take place on January 14 and more than 80 delegates from around the world will compete for the crown at the Ernest N. Moral Convention Center in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. For the national costume round, Ms. Rai attracted attention in a gold outfit.
Designed by Abhishek Sharma, the outfit personified’Son Ki Chidiya– “the ethereal representation of India as the golden bird that is a symbol of the richness of our rich cultural heritage along with the spiritual essence of living in harmony with diversity.”

Designer Abhishek Sharma spoke about the ensemble in an Instagram post. He wrote, “The intense gold metallic hand embellishments are a true example of the finest craftsmanship of our artisans. The lehenga is made from a hand-woven weave fabric from the Chandheri district of Madhya Pradesh and the drape represents the image of a modern India.”
He added: “The wings represent the power of nourishment and care that India has shown to the citizens of the world in the difficult times and cared and stood as support with the idea of “One World One Family”. The national costume in its true meaning is the essence of modern India and its approach to progressive thinking.”
