Delta variant circulating in areas with low vaccination coverage: WHO epidemiologist (representative)
Geneva:
The spread of the Delta variant in areas of low vaccination coverage is fueling the transmission of COVID-19 around the world, World Health Organization officials said Wednesday.
“Many of the places in the world where Delta is on the rise – even in countries with high vaccination coverage nationally – the virus, the Delta variant itself, is really circulating in areas of low vaccination coverage and in the context of a very limited and inconsistent use of public health and social measures,” WHO epidemiologist Maria Van Kerkhove told an online newsletter.
Vaccines clearly prevent an increase in serious illness and death from the Delta variant, added WHO chief scientist Soumya Swaminathan.
