Assam lifted travel restrictions to Meghalaya on Sunday, six days after they were imposed in the wake of violence in a disputed area along the interstate border, police said.
Vehicles from Assam are now allowed to enter Meghalaya, a senior police officer said.
“Vehicles will be escorted where necessary. Police patrols will be provided in other vulnerable areas,” he said.
The Assam police has issued an advisory asking people not to travel to the neighboring state after the incident on Tuesday.
Violence erupted in the village of Mukroh near the disputed border between the two states in West Karbi Anglong district in the early hours of Tuesday after a truck allegedly loaded with illegally harvested timber was intercepted by Assam foresters. Meghalaya and a forest ranger from Assam were killed in the clashes.
