BRUSSELS: Apple Inc will try to convince EU antitrust regulators it will not block rivals’ access to its technology used for mobile wallets in a closed hearing on Tuesday, people familiar with the matter said, the last chance to do this before potentially hefty fines.
The hearing, which will include senior officials from the European Commission and national competition authorities, executives and complainants from Apple, comes nine months after the EU competition watchdog accused the company of abusing its market power.
The EU’s antitrust watchdog has said Apple’s anti-competitive practices date back to 2015 when Apple Pay was launched.
The Commission declined to comment. Apple was referring to its statement last year that Apple Pay is just one of many options available to European consumers and has guaranteed equal access to its tap-and-go Near-Field Communication (NFC) technology.
The company could be fined up to 10% of its global revenue if found guilty of antitrust violations. It is also the target of EU allegations of abusing its dominance in the music streaming market in a case sparked by a Spotify complaint. There is no EU decision on that matter yet.
