Violence in Manipur: The Home Secretary assured the Prime Minister of all possible assistance.
New Delhi:
Home Minister Amit Shah today briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the steps taken by the Manipur government and the center to restore normalcy to the crisis-hit state.
Prime Minister Modi returned to India early this morning after finishing his five-day visit to the US and Egypt.
The briefing comes a day after Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh met Amit Shah at his home in Delhi and submitted a report on the “evolving situation” in Manipur.
He told Mr Shah that the state and central governments have been able to “largely” contain the violence.
The Minister of the Interior assured the Prime Minister of all possible assistance.
“It is time for all stakeholders, civil agencies, MLAs and political leaders to sit together and identify the areas where everyone needs to work,” Mr Singh told reporters after the meeting.
Mr Shah also chaired an all-party meeting on Saturday, which was attended by 18 political parties. At the meeting, party representatives urged the Center to prepare a “time-bound action plan” to restore peace to the state.
The interior minister said the prime minister has been monitoring the situation in the violence-ravaged state since day one and is guiding authorities with “full sensitivity”.
Officials gave party representatives a detailed look at the efforts made since the state’s first violence on May 3, deploying nearly 36,000 state security personnel.
The ministry has said that the situation in Manipur is slowly returning to normal. Officials said the security forces are focusing more on humanitarian operations and area domination patrols.
