India on Tuesday admitted for the first time that it had held diplomatic talks with the Taliban, which has taken control of Afghanistan in recent days after the withdrawal of US troops there. An Indian envoy met with a leader of the terrorist group in Qatar’s capital Doha. The meeting took place at the request of the new rulers of the conflict-affected country.
Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden on Tuesday defended his decision to withdraw troops from Afghanistan, saying it was in the US national interest, AFP news agency reported.
“We no longer had a clear goal in an open mission in Afghanistan,” he said a day after the final withdrawal.
“This is the right decision. A wise decision. And the best decision for America,” he said.
