The Government of India has made Aadhaar and PAN cards essential for some services including filing income tax returns.
The deadline for linking PAN and Aadhaar cards was March 31, 2022, but has been extended to March 31.
Citizens can link their Aadhaar and Pan cards online by paying a small fine. After the new deadline, PAN holders will no longer be allowed to use their ten-digit unique alphanumeric number and all financial transactions associated with PAN will cease. All current income tax returns will also not be processed.
“Under the Income Tax Act, 1961, it is mandatory for all PAN holders, who do not come under the exempt category, to link their PAN to their Aadhaar before March 31, 2023. From April 1, 2023, the non-linked PAN will become inoperative become. What is necessary is necessary. Don’t wait any longer, pair it today!” writes the Tax Authorities in a tweet.

Citizens had to pay a fee of Rs 500 if the Aadhaar link with PAN was completed between April 1 and June 30, 2022. If anyone still has not linked their Aadhaar and PAN, they can now do so until March 31, 2023, with a fine from Rs 1,000.
Here’s how to link your PAN to Aadhaar online.
Link via the portal of the Tax and Customs Administration
Step 1: Go to incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in, the IT department’s e-filing portal.
Step 2: Click on the ‘Link Aadhaar’ option under the ‘Quick Links’ section of the web page.
Step 3: This will redirect you to a new page where the PAN number, Aadhaar number and other required details like your name must be entered.
Pairing via SM
Step 1: Call 567678 or 56161 on a mobile device to send a text message. The format should be UIDPAN (10 digit PAN card number), 12 digit Aadhaar card number and space.
Step 2: After this, an SMS informs you about the PAN-Aadhaar link status. The Aadhaar and PAN will only be linked if the date of birth of the taxpayer matches both documents.
An individual is liable for all consequences under the IT Act when a PAN expires on March 30 per a circular issued by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), which sets policy for the Income Tax Department.
