The government has procured 889 lakh metric tons (LMT) of paddy rice during the current Kharif season 2020-21 to September 5, 2021 against the purchase of 764 LMT paddy during last year’s purchase in the corresponding period.
This is an all-time record purchase of paddy, surpassing the previous record of 773 LMT, which was made in the 2019-20 kharif marketing season.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Agriculture, the tender has benefited about 130 lakh farmers as they have received a minimum support price (MSP) of Rs 1,67,960 crore.
During the recently concluded 2021-22 Rabi marketing season, wheat purchases reached 433 LMT until August 18, 2021, also reaching an all-time high.
The previous high was the wheat purchase was 389.93 LMT, which was reached during the Rabi marketing season of 2020-21.
About 49.20 farmers have benefited from the ongoing procurement activities of the Rabi marketing season as they have received an MSP worth of Rs 85,603 crore, the statement said.
