Taxpayers have been urged by the income tax department to send “quick” online responses so that their refunds pending for tax year 2020-21 can be expedited.
According to a statement from the ministry, it claimed that approximately 93 percent of refund requests in income tax returns filed for the aforementioned assessment period have currently been processed.
“Refunds of more than Rs 15,269 crore have been issued in the past week and will be credited to taxpayers shortly,” the statement said.
The department further said that to expedite pending 2020-21 refunds, it is contacting taxpayers as their response would be needed for purposes such as “prima facie adjustments, defects, adjustments under Section 245 and failure of refunds due to mismatched bank accounts.”.
“The department is requesting taxpayers to respond quickly online so that the income tax returns (ITRs) in such cases from 2020-21 can be processed quickly,” the statement added.
The statement states that the income tax department “has also started processing ITRs 1 and 4 for AY 2021-22 and any refunds will be deposited directly into the taxpayer’s bank account”.
